Countdown to Zero

The documentary “Countdown to Zero” is a must see for anyone concerned about world peace. Below is just a trailer, but the full movie is on netflix and on youtube.

Many people have argued that religion is harmless, it gives people solace and comfort.  I think that any belief which does not have its basis in the absolute truth and personal experience is dangerous.  Whilst the documentary deals with the issue of a nuclear catastrophe as a result of an accident or miscalculation,  it also deals with it being caused as an act of madness. The documentary echoes what I have thought all along,  that if a terrorist got their hands on a nuclear weapon,  they would have no hesitation in using it.
This is evident in the recent Paris attacks and 9/11. To repeat a quote from Voltaire I mentioned in my last post “Those that can make you believe absurdities,  can make you commit atrocities.” You can go back in history and there was the crusades and the spanish inquisition.

What is alarming in the documentary is the relative ease with which one can build a nuclear bomb,  and although buying the nuclear material like enriched uranium would take a lot of funds, the material is nowhere near as tightly as controlled as it should be, and could be imported into a country with relative ease.

The documentary is made by the same producer from “An Inconvenient Truth” one of my favourite documentaries.  They asked a number of people what they thought was an acceptable number of nuclear weapons for the world to have and their answers were all none, zero, etc. Hence the title of the movie, a Countdown to Zero nuclear weapons. Ian,
I respect your call for world peace and this website which is dedicated to it. I just want to share a few thoughts which might help you understand the God in whom you say you believe exists. I considered myself to be agnostic 12 years ago but have since been convinced God is real and has a plan for my life. I won’t bore you with my personal story but here are a few facts to consider:
    1) Out of the 1,000 pages of the average Bible, the word “peace” is mentioned 250 times. That’s once every four pages. Anyone who takes the Bible seriously and believes in God is pro-peace.
    2) The concept of peace found in Scripture is actually the Jewish concept of “shalom”. The peace God promises to His people (or those who believe in Him), is a complete peace. The actual Hebrew and Greek words originally used in the Bible refer to unity, wholeness, and harmony when discussing peace. God offers us internal peace as well as peace between each other and calls us to acts of peace.
    3) There are those in any religion (or any society for that matter) who seek a path of destruction and violence over peace. Most world religions call for peace, but I can speak personally for Christianity.
    4) If you’d like to read more about the type of peace God offers us, feel free to check out” http://www.umc.org/what-we-believe/social-principles-social-creed.
This is an excerpt: War and Peace

We believe war is incompatible with the teachings and example of Christ. We therefore reject war as an instrument of national foreign policy. We oppose unilateral first/preemptive strike actions and strategies on the part of any government. As disciples of Christ, we are called to love our enemies, seek justice, and serve as reconcilers of conflict. We insist that the first moral duty of all nations is to work together to resolve by peaceful means every dispute that arises between or among them. We advocate the extension and strengthening of international treaties and institutions that provide a framework within the rule of law for responding to aggression, terrorism, and genocide. We believe that human values must outweigh military claims as governments determine their priorities; that the militarization of society must be challenged and stopped; that the manufacture, sale, and deployment of armaments must be reduced and controlled; and that the production, possession, or use of nuclear weapons be condemned. Consequently, we endorse general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control.

    5) Finally, this is one of the best examples from the Bible:
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.” Colossians 3:15

May God bless you and bring you peace,

In my personal opinion, christianity is a fabricated religion based on the egyptian god horus.
As to the bible being a book of peace, a few select quotes
    Exodus 32:27-29

Then he said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.’ “The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died. Then Moses said, “You have been set apart to the LORD today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.”

    1 Samuel 15:3,8

Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’ ” … He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword.

    Hosea 13:16

Samaria shall bear her guilt, because she has rebelled against her God; they shall fall by the sword, their little ones shall be dashed in pieces, and their pregnant women ripped open.

Not to mention the numerous quotes in the bible which condone a person being stoned to death for any number of reasons.

I think it is outright dangerous to have politicians in charge who believe in this religion, who also have the power to authorise the launch of a nuclear weapon.

The world is in dire need of some change. The Planet itself is now at stake.
Will the human species realize in time the error of its ways.

Countdown to Zero is a reminder that just because the Cold War is over does not mean the danger passed
